  1. Irritating Demons

    Wednesday, October 6, 2021

Days went by without seeing my little feline girlfriend, Mustache.  I wondered if they’d tell me if she had died.  I had gone in that store daily either to use the ATM (best priced in the area) or get toilet paper or something I needed in hopes of seeing her.  Then one day I was just walking past the store and saw her in there.  I went in just to visit with her.  She came right over and meowed telling me stuff.  I told her I missed her and was hoping to see her.  Her expression of love was more intense than usual.  I assumed she missed me too, and we were both saying (in different languages), “Where you been?!!?”  As I was leaving without her approval, she smacked my ankle with both paws.  I understood and bent down to give her more petting.

In a previous blog, I mentioned that there was more to the situation with me and Mustache.  Apparently the worker who cares for her – litter box cleaning, food, water – resents very much that she loves me.  Other customers often point out how she may like others but she loves me.  Some have said I should take her home.  I remind them that she lives and works there and isn’t up for adoption.  The man who takes care of her needs is also someone she is cautious of.  I have seen him pull her by her tail, toss empty boxes in her direction, and other stuff like that.  I then wonder why anyone is shocked at how much she loves me.  She can trust me!  He also used to let her go out and be impregnated over and over again so he could sell the kittens.  It took pressure from the customers for him to hear that she must be spayed.  Finally she is spayed.  About two years ago, I asked the man where the baby was, and that turned into an ugly interaction.  I was amazed.  He’s a worker there.  The other worker is nice, and the owner knows me for years, so I wasn’t going to end my relationship with Mustache because of the a-hole.  She deserves love and apparently needs it.  And loving her is a real pick-me-up in my day.  So fuck him.

I have, since childhood, struggled with why some people dislike nice people.  I saw it in my extended family, and it didn’t make sense to me.  I experienced it at a job, and it didn’t make sense to me, especially because it was a field in the helping professions.  One day I saw this meme, and that made sense to me.

    The Red Nickel Demons Dance

“I shouldn’t have had so many children.  I should’ve only had three like my sister.”
“But Grandma, then you wouldn’t have my mother or me.”
    “So, you wouldn’t know me.”
“Noooooo, Grandma, don’t say that.  I love you.  Don’t you love me?”
“You wouldn’t be here.  You wouldn’t know me.”

God, do you remember that I’m here?  Please don’t forget about me, God.  Grandpa said you see  everything.  I hope you do.  I really hope you do.

“I miss my mother.  I want my mother.”
You have to be an understanding child!  Your mother is a sick girl!”

“Go be nice to your fucken self.”

    “How come I don’t have a father?”
“He’s from a communist country!  He can’t be with you.  Pretend like he’s dead.  It happens.  What if he was dead?”
    “But he’s not dead.”

“Your mother was one of seven, and no one could take you in?!”

“If I knew you then, I would’ve adopted you.”

“If you don’t eat, I’m going to have to put you in a foster home.  I can’t keep you here if you don’t eat.”

“You better never do anything wrong, I’m tellin’ you.  Your life won’t be worth a red nickel!”

A whore and a virgin at the same time?  Had to look up whore in the dictionary and it didn’t make sense.  What does sexually loose mean?  Why does my aunt say that to me?  How can I be something I don’t even understand?  I’m not sexually anything.  I’m twelve.

“You want a hug!?  Wait, one day the fellas will hug you.”
“I want you to hug me, Grandma.”
“What’s wrong with you?  My children didn’t act like this.  Except the sick ones.  You better be careful.”

“There’s nothing more important than family.  Don’t ever forget that!”

“You sit all hunched over and your mouth hangs open.  You look like a monkey.”

He played a song for someone else and the lyrics went, “I want to be your number one…”

“You’re always crying.  You’re going to turn out just like your mother.  You better be careful, I’m tellin’ you!”

“You are not going to like yourself if you do anything with him.”

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   “You could do worse.”

“Don’t ever talk about your family.”

“I’ve been trying to back off.  You, not so much.”

“You should drop out of college.  It’s all wasted on a nigger-lover like you.”

He took the picture of me down.  He had it up and called me fascinating.  Now it’s gone.   Wish I felt nothing about that.

“I ain’t be seein’ nobody ‘cuz when I’m with somebody and they do me wrong, then I do me wrong.  So I ain’t be seein’ nobody.”

So many of these so-called big strong men are weak little boys, Mindy, who need the next woman lined up and ready if they even feel a chance of being alone for a minute.

                                                                  Back off.”

                                                                      “She’s ignoring me.”

“Carol’s mother says you don’t have confidence.  What’s wrong with you?!  Why does she say that?”

                                                                            “You’re better than that!”

    Am I?  Am I?

    Toyed with.

“Don’t let anyone toy with your life.”

He played a song for someone else and the lyrics went, “I want to be your number one…”

“You shouldn’t have been born.  If I knew you were going to turn out like this, I’d have had your mother have an abortion.”

He wrote that he pissed me off, and then he LOL’d.

“You act common… like a common girl.  I’m disappointed in you.”

                                                                                                                                                                 He LOL’d.

“If you do anything wrong, you can just throw yourself down a river.”

“We attract people who we recognize as human based on what we grew to know as home.”
“You can’t say that to me.  You don’t know what that means.”
“That’s where we start, but we grow from there.”

Maybe I need to cry, and he is my onion.  Maybe I miss my family.  That can be dangerous.  Maybe it is my default position to slip into something ill-fitting and emotionally abrasive enough to call home.

The cat should scratch him.  It’s so deeper than crabby.

  3. Late

    Monday, September 10, 2012

    By Samantha DeRose

My blog's going to be extremely late today... but I know you'll forgive.  I'll be back later with a full post.

OK.  I'm back.  It's 1:24 and I'm, well, obviously, extremely late.  I had great intentions of writing my blog at church, yes, church, where I thought I'd have sufficient pew time to pen an entry.  But alas, it was not to be.  So here I sit during my free period at school trying to piece together some of the notes that I wrote down whist sitting in my pew yesterday.

Confession time...even though I was raised Lutheran and we don't believe in confession.  I bring my kids to Sunday school.  All the more reason for them to hate me.  Hear me out.  I went to church every Sunday until I went off to college.  It was a social thing.  Lots of my friends from high school belonged to the parish, so Sundays were just an extension of hang-out time together - sharing stories of the parties from the night before, we occasionally went on retreats (where we often drank a little more than just communion wine), so it really wasn't the fire and brimstone that one would think.  It was kind of fun and my friends were kind of hilarious.

I went on to college and became an English major (hence the day job teaching high school English) and guess what?  Some of what I had heard every Sunday had proven to be useful from an historic standpoint.  All of those biblical references in Shakespeare, Chaucer, Joyce, you name it, I understood it.  Kind of cool.

So I send my kids.  They go with my parents on Sundays, but I attend once in a blue moon when my kids need a real parent for some type of holiness.

Yesterday was what we Lutherans (or as you Catholics like to call us, Sinners...better than being one of those Presbians)  call Homecoming Sunday.  It's basically the first Sunday back after not worshipping for the summer.

I managed to jot down some notes from the sermon:
    1. Homecoming - Kind of like the homecoming game, only the homecoming king wears sandals
2  Gadgets - 3 kindles (my 2 sons & my nephew), 1 iPad (my niece), 1 iphone (me) - How on earth did I survive with just that little tiny pew pencil drawing on the back of that communion record card?
3Jesus touching someone's tongue - I came in late to this one because I was making funny faces at my niece... She got in trouble for laughing and I pretended it wasn't me.  I'm 43.
    4.  Casting Out Demons - I don't know if this came after the tongue touching, but somewhere a demon was cast out.  I always wondered where the demons went after they were cast out.  They never say. Or if they did say, I wasn't paying attention...I was probably hung over.
    5.  Part of the Inner Circle of being Christian -  Apparently, there was some girl who was kind of a bitch, and at first, Jesus was just going to let her suffer with whatever affliction she had.  I dunno.  Leprosy, blindness, muteness (?).  But then he realized that she was a member of the club and decided to fix 'er up.  As long as you're a member, there's help for you!
    6.  Communion - This part was fun.  We went up for communion and we all knelt down at the wooden thingy (great description for an English teacher).  Now, my mother just had double knee surgery, so she remained standing.  My sister was two communees away from me and she made eye contact with me and was giggling.  SHIT!!!  I mouthed, "What???"  She mouthed, "I was wondering why Mommy seemed so tall"  I started to shake, Mommy shot me a dirty look.  My sister is 52.  We got in trouble.
    7.  VAT EES WRONG MIT YOU?  VY DEED YOU DO DAT TO YOURSELV?   YOU LOOK SCHTRAINCH-  That's the German accent for, "What is wrong with you?  Why did you do that to yourself?  You look strange." This was the conversation that I had with an elderly "friend" of the family who has never said ONE nice thing to me in 43 years.  He was referring to my haircut - I shaved it in May for a children's cancer research fundraiser -   I gave him a card for The Allwood Funeral Home and told him that he'd better make those pre-arrangements sooner rather than later.
    8.  This is the gay line, this is the straight line.  Following the service there was a pot luck. Another fine parishioner  was directing feasters to either side of the table by saying, "This side is for the gay people, this side is for the straight people."  I asked him if was on these lines because the douche bag line was too long.

I also recorded some hymns with some really off key high notes, but I can't figure out how to transfer it onto my computer and I don't want to be any later than I already am.

Pretty sure that my mom won't be speaking to me for two weeks due to #6, #7, #8 (possibly #2 & #3) - All in the name of the father, son, and comedy spirit, AYMEN!
