Thank goodness the holidays are over for now.  That’s how I feel.  I am grateful that my best buddy and I got together and, by car, brought my December rent check to the rental office on Dec. 31st (how’s that for last minute) and then went to an Indian restaurant for dinner on New Year’s Eve.  It wasn’t planned in advance; it happened spontaneously.  He treated.  We enjoyed each other’s company and conversation.  Since it wasn’t planned, it felt like a bonus.  Earlier that last day of 2024, I was informed that a poem of mine was accepted for the March issue of First Literary Review East.  I am grateful for the communities of which I am part.

The first day of 2025 was the New Year’s Day Spoken Word Extravanga from 2 to 10pm way down in the West Village.  I was scheduled to read somewhere between 3 and 4pm, but I was quite late and read somewhere after 5pm.  I am glad they don’t have the “You’re late!” attitude.  They put me up later on, and I was welcomed.  Aside from reading three short poems, I presented my divorce t-shirts for sale.  I made a sale, which helped me get through the next two days.  My reading was well received.  I was glad to see many poetry folks I don’t see often, mainly because many are downtown poets and I’m in the Bronx.  It was a good way to start the year.

Contact me if you’d like a shirt for yourself or as a gift for someone else.  They are unisex and XL.

I’ll be performing stand-up at Pangea (178 Second Avenue, NYC) on Friday, 1/24/2025 in the 9pm “Eat Drink Laugh” show, produced and hosted by the very funny Paul Hallasy.  It’s always a hilarious time, and we are going to need it.  Tickets $15 at the door ($10 in advance) – and $20 minimum on drink and/or delicious food.  Laughter guaranteed!

  2. 2019 Into 2020

    Friday, January 10, 2020

A good, healthy 2020 to us.

December 18, 2019 was the premiere showing of the first two episodes of
Mob Mentality.  It was shown as one feature film.  I’m in two scenes.  Media was there.  Open bar, food, much of the cast.

The premiere was a first for me.  I was more glammed up than most of you have seen me.  Here’s a one-minute capture of the event.  I’m in for about 2 seconds while being interviewed.

During the interview, I was asked about the most exciting thing I did in
the film.  In Mob Mentality, I play a mob wife.  So in quickly thinking about what my character has done so far, I said, “Lusting over the lead.”  I believe he misunderstood what I meant (or I wasn’t clear enough).  I think, based on his facial expression, that he thought I gave a ‘dumb broad’ kind of answer.  I think he thought that I, Mindy, was lusting over the lead.  No, my character was, and it was a first for me to do on camera.  But there was no time to clear that up.  So the reporter may have thought I was a dingbat.  To be clear, the lead, Jack Spiegs, is a very handsome man.  But I don’t usually feel lust over younger men.  I don’t think I ever have.

I am glad I went.  In some ways, it was a struggle.  I had found out one of
my aunts had passed away.  I was having other troubles that I won’t share here.  Plus I’m so broke that even carfare is a strain at times.  So there I was all fancy shmancy, and I wanted to look and feel happy and celebratory.  My insides made it a challenge.  On the train ride, I kept trying to will happy times in my head.  I’m not good at faking; it’s not my aim to be good at faking.  So I really tried hard to connect with good feelings deep inside.  By the time I arrived, I had succeeded enough to enjoy myself while I was there.

I also want to share that my 12/28/2019 Winter Comedy Show at The
Artist on City Island went very well.  All the comics brought it.  I hadn’t been worried about that.  I like my taste and had faith in the comics.  My concerns were more about getting audience to come out to City Island in the winter.  Not only did they attend the show, they were very generous when the hat was passed around.  I felt so grateful.

The next day I was paid for a proofreading job I did for a friend.  By
12/31, I was able to pay December’s rent.  Whew.

On the 1st day of the new year, I was so glad to be part of the Alternative New Year’s Day Spoken Word Extravaganza.  It’s an annual tradition in its 26th year.  Nine hours, many readers, 3 minutes each.  I so enjoyed reading to such an attentive and appreciative audience.  I was only able to stay for two hours this time.  We get to hear some new people and some people we’ve enjoyed hearing at these events over time.  I am glad when I start the year off this way.

Apparently, I missed a poet who shared his new year poem that someone
felt so excited about that she shared it via email to other poets she knows.  I was one she sent it to, and it was just what I needed.  The main message was to make this year better than last year.  That has been helping me each day.  He discouraged huge unrealistic goals; just better than last year.  That seemed approachable to me.  So far, it’s been helpful.  The poet’s name is Jee Leong Koh.  He’s on Facebook.

A comedy pal of mine recommended me to be booked in a show.  That felt
so good.  Plus she and I seem to have gotten to know each other better recently.  I value that.

The price is right.  The line-up is great.  Come on over.

    Love to CGG-M always.

    Rest in peace, Aunt Lorraine.

  3. As 2014 Comes To a Close...

    Tuesday, December 30, 2014

My year is ending with me alive and still employed (thank Goodness), my son alive and employed (thank Goodness), my dog doing more okay than not, with a second Divorced Divas of Comedy show in the planning stages, and with this that I have yet to hold in my hands.  A slice of my life is included in here.  It’s a thin slice as we were given strict word limits.

The Bronx Memoir Project vol. 1 is available on Nook and Amazon.  The slices in there span generations and cultures, all culminating in the Bronx.  I am proud to be included in it; I would’ve felt regretful if I hadn’t submitted anything.  After struggling with the challenge to keep it short while still giving a sense of my life and feeling very conscious of this being archived Bronx history where I wanted to feel sure I wouldn’t regret my words, I was finally satisfied with my submission.

On January 1, 2015 at the Nuyorican Poets Café on East 3rd Street,  there’s a spoken word extravaganza that goes from 2pm to midnight and is FREE. Anyone can come for any amount of time.  They appreciate if you donate a paperback for Books Behind Bars.  There’s also a limited open mic throughout the day amongst the 160 scheduled performers (of which I am one).  Each gets 3minutes.  My 3 minutes will be somewhere between 4 and 6pm.  This year, the event is titled, The Shadow of the Geode.

Please pass this along to people you know who would like the option to attend such an event to start off 2015.
Let’s aim to have an enjoyable, sharing, and productive year in all the many ways we each do that.
    Affectionately, Mindy

  4. Welcome 2014

    Tuesday, December 31, 2013

I am pleased with my New Year's Day plans.  One is a free group workout in the early evening -- a very hopeful way to start 2014.  I really really do want to be a more healthy person and have a strong and toned body.  I am hoping I take the necessary steps.  So when I saw the opportunity, I said yes.  I want to look at my body and feel as proud as she must though I don't need that amount of thigh.  I love the strong mid-section and the arms.

Then after that I will continue further downtown to the Nuyorican Poets Café where I am scheduled to contribute my 3 minutes of poetry somewhere between 8 and 10pm at an all-day extravaganza of over 170 contributors.

Day one of the new year will have no early morning commitments, will involve organized exercise, and will include sharing poetry and listening to the poetry of others.  I want to stay productive.  A friend told me to own the year.

I was going to list some hopes I have for the new year, but I feel hesitant to make that public.  Not sure why.  So I'll just say I have things to pay more attention to.  Lots of things.

Readers, friends, sporadic visitors, have a safe New Year's.  May life keep getting better as we keep getting smarter.
