  1. It's Your Time by Rhonda Hansome

    Thursday, January 3, 2013

    It's Your Time

2013 is galloping away like a perp from an old lady push-in.
I missed all the comedy holiday parties and spent innumerable hours this  week mentally re-creating party by party the competitive banter, and alcohol infused groping.  And that's just what I wanted to do to the club managers, bookers and industry machers.  Speaking of influential, note to Jeffrey Gurian: it's a shanda what I did to you in my mind this week!

What else did I do this week? I saw two great period movies.  Lincoln and Django Unchained.  Lincoln and Django are period movies, because, like a period they are full of pain and blood.  I was so into the movie Lincoln, I totally missed recognizing Private Harold Green was played by one of my favorite actors,
                                                                        Colman Domingo

     Colman Domingo
He's a writer, singer, dancer, actor, and all around phenomenal talent.  Ever since I first saw him at the Public Theater in Passing Strange, Colman has been on my bucket list to direct (because I'm a serious award winning theater director* when not on a comedy mic cracking wise) but I'd settle for acting with him on a sitcom or police procedural show.  Colman, call me!

When he first appeared on screen in Django, Samuel Jackson scared the crap out of me.  In his tour de force performance he channels the infamous Boondocks animated character...

                    Uncle Ruckus

Django Unchained, what can I say that can't be said with buckets of bullets and blood?  I laughed, I cried, I gasped and guffawed.through this wild ride sprung from the mind of Quentin Tarantino.  I just don't understand the shock at racial epithets, the surprise at historical inaccuracy, and the controversy regarding the unfettered violence.  For crying out loud! Well there was a lot of that in the movie too, but it IS a Quentin Tarantino flick,  Django is a stylized piece offering a cornucopia of his signature Tarantino excesses. You don't go to the hardware store for cotton balls!

Things are pretty crazy these days, the fiscal cliff,  mass shootings, subway deaths and worst of all, my social media addiction.
That monkey on my back has ramped up to crystal meth proportions, minus the slenderizing weight loss. Email, my gateway drug, satisfied me for more than a decade.  Then I toyed with facebook and chipped linkedin.  Now I mainline twitter and just this week sniffed tumblr. Who knows what's next, podcasts, vlogging? There's no end to it!!!

So Dear Reader** if you, like me, need electronic platform rehab, or feel your life is a Tarantino movie I offer the following...

I hope that helps.  See you next week!

  2. Presidential Zebras by Rhonda Hansome

    Thursday, December 6, 2012

Growing up, when I watched a movie showing a black president confidently handling the critical affairs of state, I’d smile and marvel at the outlandish imagination of speculative science fiction; that is until my furiously worldly high school best friend pulled my coat to historian J.A. Rogers.

Rogers' tome, Five Negro Presidents is just one of his enlightening contributions* to historical perspective.

Here Doctor Leroy Vaughn supports Rogers’ premise:

“William Chancellor, a White professor of economics and politics at Wooster College in Ohio, wrote a book on the Harding family genealogy and identified Black ancestors among both parents of President Harding. Justice Department agents allegedly bought and destroyed all copies of this book.” **

On the silver screen when portraying the powerful, Morgan Freeman is charismatic and obviously Black.

    Dracula

     God

    POTUS

The previous presidential zebras - Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln, Harding and Coolidge - in spite of their "mixed blood" were able to pass for white.  Not Obama.

We are living a moment in history Dear Readers!  Well technically, minute to minute, we are always living a moment in history, but in THIS moment, America has re-elected its first president to openly admits his white AND black heritage.  Yes, Obama is a member of that very exclusive club, Presidential Zebras!

How in 2012 did this half & half man get RE-ELECTED president of the U.S.?  The GOP spent more than a BILLION $$$ on voter suppression and negative attack ads. How did this sexy*** zebra get BACK into the White House you ask?   One word -

    Michelle!

I am convinced that Michelle, like my mother and her mother before her worked some mojo to “Make a way out of no way.”  And I imagine it went a little something like this.

The night before the election the First Lady whispered to her spouse…

... Meet me in the Lincoln bedroom.

When Barack got there she was wearing his favorite outfit, her birthday suit.  In Michelle's hand was the conjure bag her mother had given her on her wedding night.

He had not seen that red bag of tricks in what, almost 4 years?  Barack settled into Lincoln's bed and allowed his eyes to revel in his wife's exquisite charms.  And as she sprinkled bits of goofer dust**** she danced for her man and sang.

Mitt wants to be Commander in Chief?
Listen Barak, just renew our lease.
Romney ain’t movin' into OUR home
‘Cause I’m the power behind the throne!
Said I’m the power behind the throne!

With a seductive glance and a final booty clap, Michelle joined her husband in the Lincoln bed. He held her close.  She grabbed his ears.  Barack assiduously paid obeisance to his queen until he heard her throaty moan exclaim, “I’m the power behind the throne!"
