  1. Just Stuff

Well, boo fuckin' hoo.  I didn't get selected to participate in the festival where I had submitted a video of me doing stand-up.  Almost sixty people were selected.  I am very curious about the quality of their work and how mine lacks.  In the past few days, I remembered that announcements would be made soon.  So I again watched the tape I had sent, and I realized that the first minute did not get enough laughs per minute if that's how it is judged.  I wondered if they'd watch the whole thing or if my first minute was it.  Oh well.

I have had some free time though quite broke.  My dog had vet needs which came when I'm the most broke.  That's the way it goes.  I know my free-ish time will be coming to an end, and though I was able to do many things, there are still many things I didn't get to.  I knew I'd feel somewhat uplifted if I did some cleaning of very neglected areas.  I already had the supplies, so no money was needed.  I finally put the thought and desire into action at 3am one night.  I felt better about myself turning something awful into its original white and shiny state.  Scents changed as a result, and I wondered for a quick second if I upset the mouse world.  The next day a mouse ran by and into my broom closet.  Ugh.  I have to work consciously to feel like it is my apartment and not the mouse's.  I am afraid of rodents and detest that they enter where I exist.  I stomped around to try to convince myself I am bigger and all the stuff people tell me.  My dog immediately knew what that meant, and he then seems afraid which is just awful.  Meanwhile, I am supposed to make sure he doesn't lie on the hard floor so his elbow can heal.  I feel I need to pad the whole place.  He has a bed, he uses the sofa, and I allow him on a chair, but still he lies on the floor also.  Maybe for the coolness.  But his elbow needs to heal.  I'm not supposed to let him lick it, so I put a cone on his head which he hates.  He's an old man, a darling old man, and I hate to make him miserable with the cone, but he has to heal.  He's on a second round of stronger antibiotics.

Soon, both jobs are going to blast me away.  That's how it feels.  I have to remember to breathe and how much better it will be to be able to pay my bills more easily again.

I just opened my bottle of wine.  Ten bucks, and I'm my Saturday night date.  I just need a big strong man who laughs in the face of a mouse.

Other than that, I need a nonjudgmental cleaning and therapy team to help me.  It's not that I don't want to throw things out.  I am very happy when I've gone through clutter and fill a bag for garbage.  I appreciate the cubic inches of air space.  It feels hopeful.  What is so very difficult is going through and looking at each thing.  No one can do that for me.  I'm digging out, but the pace isn't fast enough.  It's like an archaeological dig.  I find things from eras ago.

I have prepared a shopping bag of clothes to bring to the shelter in the neighborhood.  The more stuff I get out of my house, the better.  I am so overwhelmed.  I need to get this place back to where it once was when it looked like someone creative and healthy enough lived here on a low budget.  Now it looks like a baffling case study.

If you would like to come to a free comedy show this Thursday evening, I'll be in Johnny Zito's show at Goodbye Blue Monday, 1087 Broadway, Bushwick, Brooklyn.  (J train to Koskiuszko Street & walk a block.)  7:30pm, nice place, CBGB vibe, affordable drinks, and good food.  I hope to have the honor of entertaining you.  It is my last free Thursday night for some months.  Next week, my evening job will be in full swing.  I am thankful that Johnny fit me into this week's show, and I hope you come and have some laughs with me.  (Hosted by Greggory Daniels! Stand-up from Joe Newman, Robert Commiskey, Monica Taller, Gabe Zucker, Mindy Matijasevic, Rogin Kim, Momoh Pujeh, Mike Hernandez, Dee Marie, Caleb Barge, Yohei Kawamata and Johnny Zito.)

  2. Last week was a hectic week for me and a long day at work on Friday.  Lots of people are sick or getting over being sick but still coughing their germs around.  I didn’t feel great on Friday night, and I was glad it wasn’t freezing when I had to walk my dog.  By Saturday, my ear, throat, and head hurt, and I had a chest cold.
I was glad it was the weekend and one without commitments to anyone else.  I did think, however, of a co-worker who didn’t attend a meeting on Friday due to being sick.  I attended the meeting and got sick later.  Seems unjust.

I managed Saturday with tea, gargling, ginger ale, and Tylenol.  But by Sunday, my stomach was the focus.  Ugh.  Switched to peppermint tea.  If not for needing to walk the dog, I’d have slept more of Sunday away.  In spite of what felt wrong, by evening I was hungry.  I ate oatmeal.

It sucks to be sick.  One of the benefits is supposed to be not having to feel guilty or concerned about not doing anything.  I did feel concerned.  I had many things to do.  Another benefit is having the opportunity to appreciate our body’s many functions.  I do.

When I was little and got sick, my grandma* took care of me.  She was quite good at that.  She grew up when people dealt with polio, died of pneumonia and infections, and all sorts of things most of us do not deal with.  I grew up before vaccinations for many of the things we vaccinate against now.  She saw me through measles, German measles, chicken pox, asthma, and all the colds and scraped knees of my early years.  She was very proud that I don’t have one pock mark from scratching.  She had me polka-dotted with Calamine lotion and too afraid of her to scratch.  My mother would buy me Archie comic books and hang out with me when she could.

Being grown and sick means I still have to walk my dog, buy food, make tea, watch my apartment get more cluttered, etc.  I’m whining.  But it isn’t the end of the world or anything, and I’ve lived through much tougher circumstances, God knows.  I just wanted to whine a bit.  By Monday evening, I was feeling a lot better though I do have something wrong in my ear.  It might be connected to teeth issues or it might be an infection that is traveling around my body.  My worst thought is that it is something awful from cell phone use.

In the spirit of the world ending, my apartment continues to threaten to collapse.  A few months back, my bathroom and kitchen ceilings were replaced and painted.  Now there’s a leak from above making a situation where not only will those ceilings need replacing again, but the wall shared by both rooms will probably need replacing as well.  It is sometimes difficult to take all this in stride, but again, these are physical problems that, while very inconveniencing, are fixable.

I normally work most evenings to supplement my morning job income.  Working many evenings really limits my other endeavors.  Now I am on holiday break (unpaid) from one job.  This is my chance to try to do the other things I do.  So I am glad to say I will be performing at the Ooba Lounge in Brooklyn on Wednesday and the Grisly Pear in the Village on Thursday this week.  Next week on Thursday, I’ll be in Johnny Zito’s show at Goodbye Blue Monday in Bushwick, Brooklyn.  If you’ve been meaning to get to a show, all of these shows are free.  And just in case the world ends on 12/21, you might want to not put this off.

*My grandma's birthday is December 15th.  Though she's passed on, I feel her with me much of the time.  Happy Birthday, Grandma.

  3. Tonight at 6pm, I will be part of a line-up of poets reading at the Cornelia Street CafĂ© on Cornelia Street near Bleeker Street in the Village.  Eight bucks includes a drink.  The line-up includes Jane Ormerod, Cynthia Toronto, George Wallace, Frank Simone, Robert Gibbons, and others with whom I feel good about sharing a stage.  It probably wraps up about 8pm.  The place serves good food, so consider making it a dinner out with poetry.
I have been writing prose and poetry much longer than doing comedy.  My beginnings on stage (not counting school plays) were at poetry open mic’s.  Poetry doesn’t have the same pressures as comedy.  Poetry certainly doesn’t have to be funny though mine sometimes is.  This is one I don’t read anymore.

    Marriage Update

    Been sittin’ on a fence

And it’s pokin’ me in the ass

    1.      Like comedy, one performs/presents alone on stage and with one’s own writing. Each have had me trembling when I first got started.
December is such a huge month. Lots of paperwork awaits me as both my jobs conclude for the school cycle. Lots of birthdays and holidays and possibly the end of the world right on my birthday, 12/21.
But before the possible last day on Earth, I have a couple of comedy shows coming up. If the mood hits, I would love for you to come to the Grisly Pear (107 MacDougal Street in the Village) on Thursday, December 13th at 8pm. There’s NO cover and NO drink minimum. Part of the show is a contest. You vote for your two favorites. The winner gets a bit of cash and a couple of bookings. I could really use the support.
On 12/20, possibly the final hurrah, I will be performing at Goodbye Blue Monday in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Figured I should go out in laughter.
