  1. Plan Ahead for Comedy

    Thursday, July 24, 2025

Hi people.  Puh-leeze mark your calendars for a very funny show on September 12th at 8pm on City Island – a lovely place to spend the day and then come to THE ARTIST for comedy and dessert!  The show features Mike Hernandez Vacas, TJ Meyers, Linda San Lucas, and me of course.  Tickets may be bought in advance or at the venue.  (Link to come in the near future.)

I was supposed to be a reader at the Poetry Festival on Governor’s Island on July 13th.  I felt honored that Diana Gitesha Hernandez asked me to read at her portion of the festival to represent her reading series, Artemis.  Unfortunately, I was not feeling well from the night before, and though I remained hopeful, I was not feeling better by the next day.  Diana was very understanding.  I was grateful for that.  It was my loss.

I continue to sell items from my buddy’s mother.  One day, my best buddy hung out with me during that time.  He helped me so much to get things downstairs and back upstairs.  Four tops and a necklace sold in a half hour.  That allowed me to get a slice of pizza and a bottle of Cabernet.  Even when I only make a little bit of cash, it helps me get through the day.

Now for the disgusting events.  While the pizza shop boss was bringing my slice out of the oven, he kept looking at something on the other side of the store.  Then he left my slice, grabbed a broom, went out from behind the counter, and was banging something that was under a table.  I couldn’t bear it and closed my eyes.  He returned and bagged my slice.  I wish I wasn’t there for that moment.

When I got home, I went to the bathroom, and there was a water bug in there.  DAMN!  Though I managed to wash my hands and leave the bathroom, the thing is still alive somewhere.  I’m not okay.

Tuesday I went with my buddy to his mom’s apartment again to get through more stuff.  My apartment looks like a hoarder’s place since I’ve been bringing stuff from her house.  It already had too much stuff, and now it is beyond that.  I hope I make more money from all that inventory because I sure need every dollar.

I was hired to teach a creative writing class for retirees of a labor union.  It will begin in September.  I haven’t been in a teaching position in a few years, and I’m excited about it.  I expect it to be an enjoyable experience, and the money will definitely help my situation.  My best bud told me he'd love to have me as a creative writing teacher.  That melted me.

Did you mark your calendars for lots of laughter on September 12th?

    Tremendous love to CGG-M ❤ 💕 💜

  2. Since I Was Last in Touch ...

    Sunday, July 6, 2025

Since I was last in touch with you, I enjoyed being in Randy Epley’s Comedy Dungeon show.  A friend, Vincent, who left NJ years ago and moved to Florida, was visiting his NJ and NYC peeps, and he attended the show.  That made it special for me.

Vincent also attended Paul Hallasy’s Eat Drink Laugh show two days later with our darling friend Judy.  I had a great experience in that show.  I always have a great experience in Paul’s show, not only performing in it but watching it as well.  Vincent, Judy, and I hung out afterwards which I love.

Then on June 20th, at my show at The Artist – the comics
were wonderful.  I just wish more people had attended.  By the end, a small group assembled outside and were laughing and cheering at Paul Hallasy's comedic song.  But, they weren’t paying guests.  I’ve got to get the audience numbers up again.  Before the pandemic, the place was packed.  My next show at The Artist will be on September 12th at 8pm.  Mark your calendars now, please.

Blocking my fatness is Paul Hallasy, to the right of me in the photo is Rob Sajous, Elliot Glick (who welcomes our show in his venue), Debbie Bazza, and our wonderful waitress.

On June 27th, there was a book launch for the Bronx Memoir Projectvol. 9.  It was held at the Poe Center at Poe Park (where Edgar Allan Poe’s cottage is preserved) in the Bronx.  Two of my short-short slices of memoir are in that anthology.  I was one of the readers at the launch, and it felt fantastic.  I received so much appreciation.  It still feels good.  https://www.amazon.de/Bronx-Memoir-Project-J-F-Seary/dp/B0FDKSQW4R

I’ve mentioned my buddy/brother Bob here before.  His mom was days away from turning 103, but passed on five days before her birthday.  She still had a lot together at 101, but after that, it seemed it was more medical issues than joy.  I’ve been with my buddy through a lot of it.  It’s been an intense few years.  Now we are working on clearing out her co-op apartment.  Like many adult children find, there’s LOADS of stuff to go through.  Bob found his baby pictures, photos of his mom when she was a hot-to-trot young woman, and his father’s poetry.  There are tons of things to sort through.  His mom had a shopping jones.  There are many things she bought but never wore – shoes, handbags, clothing, and jewelry – which still had tags on them.  Bob was happy to let me try to sell many items.  Yesterday, I made a little over eighty bucks.  That helped me.  I hope she’s smiling.  Knowing her, she might be saying, “Charge more!”

Esther Cohen was quite a woman.  I hope she sees what’s going on down here and has our backs.  We need all the help we can get.

  4.

After three years, my building has gas for cooking again!  It feels a bit luxurious.

May is a difficult month for me.  Fortunately my good friend Judy sent me a link to a free on-line session addressing grief.  Though it was only an hour, it was significant.

June provides comedy.  Comic Linda Marcus Smith will be interviewing me.  She has interviewed many, many, many comics, and now I’ll be one of them.  Yay.  Then on Thu., June 12th, 8:30pm, I’ll be in Randy Epley’s Comedy Dungeon show at the Kama Central Park Hostel.  On Saturday, June 14th at 9pm, I’ll be part of Paul Hallasy’s Eat Drink Laugh show at Pangea.

And on June 20th, 8pm, is my Almost Summer comedy show at The Artist on City Island.  This show will be featuring Debbie Bazza, Rob Sajous, Paul Hallasy, and me of course.

  6. Good News and Some Laughs

    Thursday, April 17, 2025

A nice bit of news – a poem of mine appears in this beautiful publication.  If poetry is not your thing, mine is five short lines so it should be bearable.  J  It’s the first poem in this issue.  Enjoy.

    First Literary Review East

Thank you Cindy Hochman and Karen Neuberg!  Also for the bonus of letting me know on New Year’s Eve that my poem was accepted.  What a nice ending to 2024.

For those of you who like to plan ahead, mark June 20th 8pm on your calendars for my comedy show on City Island.  For those of you intrigued by a trip to City Island, but wanted to go in the warm weather, mark your calendars for June 20th 8pm at The Artist, 249 City Island Avenue.  If you enjoy laughing, mark your calendar for June 20th 8pm.

Thanks to Cicely Brooks, here's a 1-minute snippet for your funny bone:

  7. Was in Lockdown; Now on Stage

    Thursday, April 3, 2025

I’ve been in my own lock-down of sorts.  No cable, no internet, no landline.  Couldn’t see or answer emails or look on-line for gigs.  Couldn’t attend the poetry workshops I’m part of on Zoom.  Couldn’t post blogs.  No virtual auditions.  No television.  I realized how one could actually go crazy in solitary.  I was able to get incoming calls, thankfully.  Of course I can go outside; I’m not in jail.  But compared to having access to everything, it felt like just a taste of lock-down (without the hostile cellmates or spouses).

Then my buddy/brother-by-choice came to my rescue with an antenna that allowed me to get some television air channels.  Though I couldn’t see Wheel of Fortune (which is my favorite game show), it was a big relief to get any channels.  I hadn’t realized how dependent I am on TV.  Without it, I am at the mercy of my thoughts which I have to sometimes battle.

I then decided I’m going to get rid of cable, so my bill should be significantly less if I only have internet and landline.  I have to get my finances in better shape because right now I’ve been sinking.  My landlord (who has been patient with me) sold the building.  Now I have to get it right (paying rent at the beginning of the month).  Geez.  The new property manager called me and left a message about my March rent being late.  Lordy Lordy.  I returned her call and was relieved to get her voicemail.  I left a polite message including an apology.

I could have used this time productively, but I rarely did.  Sometimes, I made myself declutter (Goddess knows I need to).  I found things, including poems I had written, that I hadn’t seen in quite a while.  I also filled two bags with clutter to get rid of.  Those moments felt victorious.  But much of the time felt like I was just so cut off from so much.

After falling behind on bills, it snowballed.  And it got harder and harder to get back on track.  I have spent the majority of my life living on the edge financially.  As long as I managed to scrape by, I didn’t let it bring me down.  I’ve lived through way worse than financial problems.  But now, it felt like I could lose my apartment.  I’ve lived here since I was 21 years old.  I cannot afford to live anywhere else in my city.  One room in someone’s house would cost more than my rent for this apartment.  I am entitled to more benefits than I have applied for, so I have to get on the ball.

Another long-time good friend/angel on Earth came to my rescue with a loan of a month’s rent.  She has always been an amazing human being.  Many Pre-K kids in Brooklyn were lucky to have her for their first teacher.

When I finally get my internet back, I’m going to have hundreds or thousands of emails to get through.  I look forward to seeing what I’ve been missing.

Now, for good news, I am in Paul Hallasy’s Eat Drink Laugh show on Saturday, April 5th at 9pm at Pangea,  178 Second Avenue between 11th and 12th Streets, NYC.  $10 cover in advance; $15 cover at the door.  $20 minimum food/drink.  Food is excellent.  Laughter guaranteed!  I say this is a great event for a date   nothing better than eating, drinking, laughing, noticing what makes the other laugh (you learn a lot from that), and taking it from there.

UPDATE:  I'm back and got rid of 723 emails!

Hope to see you and hear you laughing on Saturday night.  It's always a good show.
