  1. Since I Was Last in Touch ...

    Sunday, July 6, 2025

Since I was last in touch with you, I enjoyed being in Randy Epley’s Comedy Dungeon show.  A friend, Vincent, who left NJ years ago and moved to Florida, was visiting his NJ and NYC peeps, and he attended the show.  That made it special for me.

Vincent also attended Paul Hallasy’s Eat Drink Laugh show two days later with our darling friend Judy.  I had a great experience in that show.  I always have a great experience in Paul’s show, not only performing in it but watching it as well.  Vincent, Judy, and I hung out afterwards which I love.

Then on June 20th, at my show at The Artist – the comics
were wonderful.  I just wish more people had attended.  By the end, a small group assembled outside and were laughing and cheering at Paul Hallasy's comedic song.  But, they weren’t paying guests.  I’ve got to get the audience numbers up again.  Before the pandemic, the place was packed.  My next show at The Artist will be on September 12th at 8pm.  Mark your calendars now, please.

Blocking my fatness is Paul Hallasy, to the right of me in the photo is Rob Sajous, Elliot Glick (who welcomes our show in his venue), Debbie Bazza, and our wonderful waitress.

On June 27th, there was a book launch for the Bronx Memoir Projectvol. 9.  It was held at the Poe Center at Poe Park (where Edgar Allan Poe’s cottage is preserved) in the Bronx.  Two of my short-short slices of memoir are in that anthology.  I was one of the readers at the launch, and it felt fantastic.  I received so much appreciation.  It still feels good.  https://www.amazon.de/Bronx-Memoir-Project-J-F-Seary/dp/B0FDKSQW4R

I’ve mentioned my buddy/brother Bob here before.  His mom was days away from turning 103, but passed on five days before her birthday.  She still had a lot together at 101, but after that, it seemed it was more medical issues than joy.  I’ve been with my buddy through a lot of it.  It’s been an intense few years.  Now we are working on clearing out her co-op apartment.  Like many adult children find, there’s LOADS of stuff to go through.  Bob found his baby pictures, photos of his mom when she was a hot-to-trot young woman, and his father’s poetry.  There are tons of things to sort through.  His mom had a shopping jones.  There are many things she bought but never wore – shoes, handbags, clothing, and jewelry – which still had tags on them.  Bob was happy to let me try to sell many items.  Yesterday, I made a little over eighty bucks.  That helped me.  I hope she’s smiling.  Knowing her, she might be saying, “Charge more!”

Esther Cohen was quite a woman.  I hope she sees what’s going on down here and has our backs.  We need all the help we can get.

  3.

After three years, my building has gas for cooking again!  It feels a bit luxurious.

May is a difficult month for me.  Fortunately my good friend Judy sent me a link to a free on-line session addressing grief.  Though it was only an hour, it was significant.

June provides comedy.  Comic Linda Marcus Smith will be interviewing me.  She has interviewed many, many, many comics, and now I’ll be one of them.  Yay.  Then on Thu., June 12th, 8:30pm, I’ll be in Randy Epley’s Comedy Dungeon show at the Kama Central Park Hostel.  On Saturday, June 14th at 9pm, I’ll be part of Paul Hallasy’s Eat Drink Laugh show at Pangea.

And on June 20th, 8pm, is my Almost Summer comedy show at The Artist on City Island.  This show will be featuring Debbie Bazza, Rob Sajous, Paul Hallasy, and me of course.

    Laughter guaranteed!

  5. Great Comedy and Emaciated Clowns

    Wednesday, September 6, 2023

I planned to update you, readers, yesterday (since I am the Tuesday “She”), but the day in the heat and on too little sleep exhausted me.  So I’m here on Wednesday with my fan blowing in my direction.

Regarding last blog’s concerns, I am scheduled with a specialist for an intensive interview and a couple of more tests.  Thanks to those of you who expressed concern in emails and private messages.

I want to remind you of the beautiful and funny line-up for this Friday’s comedy show.

You can, if you choose, get tickets in advance here:

    https://starvingartistci.square.site/product/friday-september-8-8-pm-almost-fall-comedy-show/56?cs=true&cst=custom&fbclid=IwAR3WPdUNZweXUVNvJvecVfcOcBDVswPz7vVHCH2s6ZfKQb32ZiITG6BDec0

Or you can pay at the end of the show at the venue.  Just get your tush there!

Yesterday, I had a new and interesting experience.  I was booked as a make-up model for a class where students learning to be make-up artists work on the model as their assignment for the evening.  I was paired with a lovely person named Bless.  From the initial hello, it felt good.  That makes all the difference to me.  The experience went well.  She showed concern for my comfort.  That makes me want to do my best, so she can do her best.  Her teacher was what I consider a good teacher – supportive, knowledgeable, and helpful, besides enjoying his job.

The experience reminded me of many thinner years ago when I often posed for art classes.  That was harder and paid less.  But it was something where schedules could be flexible.  It served as a second job for me back in my mid-twenties.  Anyway, that whole thing is for another blog another time.

These students were given different assignments and they were given their models.  The teacher made the choices.  We, the models, were to show up wearing black clothing, no make-up, and nothing scented.

When I entered the classroom, the teacher said, “Clown.”  I and the rest of the class laughed.  The student with the clown assignment told me where to sit.  While my face was a canvas, people walked by and seemed very amused.  I couldn’t wait to see what I looked like.  When the work time was over, each model was seated on a director’s chair and the class observed while the teacher gave feedback to each student make-up artist.

Bless got a raving review.  That felt good.  But that is when I learned that ‘clown’ was only part of the assignment.  She was to make me look like an emaciated clown.  Since I am now overweight, it made me laugh.  However, it also made me understand why I looked like such an ugly clown.  That was the assignment, and she aced it.

Come to the Almost Fall Comedy Show and make this clown smile.

    Great Comedy Show!

  6.

The comedy show at Bella Notte at the end of July went very well.  Enjoyed performing and watching.  Love that friends drove me there and back.  Plus a woman I met once, and communicated with on Facebook and in email since, just moved to the Bronx and came to the show!  That was such a nice surprise.  Appreciated the feedback I received from audience members and the hosts after the show.

This past Saturday was a reading and celebration of an anthology where a couple of my poems are included.  The reading was held at the Riverside Library in Manhattan.  The celebration was in the park.  I got to see people I haven’t seen in quite a while.  Fred Simpson, Jessica Nooney, Janet Restino, Natalie Lardner, and Miriam Stanley were some.  I met the poet Prince McNally in person for the first time.  Loved his vibe.

While at the park, besides being lunch for a few mosquitos, I was falling in love with several dogs, but mostly with a large German Shepherd.  His human grandpa (I later learned) was who was with him in the park.  By the third time I saw the pair, and the dog still wanted to meet me, I went over to them.  As soon as the large dog was jumping up and not hearing the human say no, I said, “He’s still a baby, right?”  That’s when I learned he is six months old.  A big, loving baby.  I assured the man I was okay with the dog  jumping on me.  Dog love is so pure.

    I need a dog.

Mark your calendars, people.  The “Almost Fall Comedy Show” at The Artist on City Island (249 City Island Avenue) is September 8th at 8pm.  Only $15 cover and NO minimum!  You can even BYOB!  I admit you might be tempted by their menu of light fare (vegetarian-friendly) and the delicious desserts by

    Jenny’s Sweets.  https://www.facebook.com/JennysSweetsSA/

It’s a very welcoming place run by Elliot and Monica Glick.

The hilarity will be provided by:

    Lisa Harmon

    Debbie Bazza

    Linette Palladino

    And, of course, me.

  7. 101

    Sunday, June 25, 2023

My bestie’s mom is turning 101 years lived today.  We are getting together to celebrate.  While it is amazing to be on Earth for that long, the quality of the later years has been challenging.  Her anger at the high prices of everything gives us the impression that she’ll be here a few more years.  She’s a fighter (or as she puts it, “I opened my mouth.”).  I could use a shot of what she has.  Years ago, when she wanted her husband to drive her to her sister’s in NJ and he didn’t feel up to it, she’d say, “I didn’t get married to take the train.”

Yeah, I could definitely use some of what she has.

People, the “Almost Autumn” Comedy Show on City Island will be on Friday, September 8th at 8pm.  If you need to or like to plan ahead, put it on your calendar now.  The hilarity will be delivered by Lisa Harmon, Debbie Bazza, and Linette Palladino.  It will be a great show.  The weather will still be pleasant.  You can have a beautiful day on City Island and then come to The Artist for comedy and dessert.  There is no minimum, but I think you may be tempted.

Recently, I got back to what seems like my never-ending decluttering.  I was able to throw out so much paper, and I found lost poems and comedy notes and some of my son’s schoolwork from way back.  So much still awaits me.  Sometimes, I have to get into the head of:  If I were to die tonight, what would I not want anyone to have to go through or even see?  That helps me throw shit out.

Folks, if you are looking for a unique and unisex gift, or if you’d like this for yourself, contact me.  I can be reached at mindyinthebronx@gmail.com, and put T-shirts in the subject line.
