She So Funny

My bestie’s mom is turning 101 years lived today.  We are getting together to celebrate.  While it is amazing to be on Earth for that long, the quality of the later years has been challenging.  Her anger at the high prices of everything gives us the impression that she’ll be here a few more years.  She’s a fighter (or as she puts it, “I opened my mouth.”).  I could use a shot of what she has.  Years ago, when she wanted her husband to drive her to her sister’s in NJ and he didn’t feel up to it, she’d say, “I didn’t get married to take the train.” 

Yeah, I could definitely use some of what she has. 

People, the “Almost Autumn” Comedy Show on City Island will be on Friday, September 8^th at 8pm.  If you need to or like to plan ahead, put it on your calendar now.  The hilarity will be delivered by Lisa Harmon, Debbie Bazza, and Linette Palladino.  It will be a great show.  The weather will still be pleasant.  You can have a beautiful day on City Island and then come to The Artist for comedy and dessert.  There is no minimum, but I think you may be tempted.

Recently, I got back to what seems like my never-ending decluttering.  I was able to throw out so much paper, and I found lost poems and comedy notes and some of my son’s schoolwork from way back.  So much still awaits me.  Sometimes, I have to get into the head of:  If I were to die tonight, what would I not want anyone to have to go through or even see?  That helps me throw shit out.

'Twas a good show!

I am so pleased to say that Friday’s “Almost Summer” Comedy Show at The Artist on City Island was well attended and very enjoyable.  TJ Meyers, Hector Luis, Donna Moran, and a ready-to-have-fun audience made for a very good night.  Since the pandemic, we’ve been working hard to get the audiences back, and Friday night was almost a full house so I was very happy about that.  Even two Facebook friends made the trip from South Brooklyn!  Pamela Gregory and Kenneth Silberberg.  Now we met in person.  I always appreciate that experience.

The photo includes Elliot Glick, who along with Monica Glick, runs the very welcoming place, now called The Artist (formerly the Starving Artist Café).  Elliot is a musician, guitar teacher, and a real contributor to the community.  They mostly showcase independent music, but they also welcome comedy, poetry, actors; they have paint nights too.  On the last Friday of the month at 8pm, they have ‘Take the Stage’ Night.  That’s where people can share any art form they do.  More info here: 

The Artist

After the show, Elliot, my friends, and I talk before leaving.  I enjoy that.  Then my friends and I typically go to the bar next door where they know how to make Long Island Ice Teas (they might call them City Island Ice Teas), and they offer outside seating.  In warm weather like Friday’s, we sit outside and can smoke, toke, and joke.  And we do.  We often close the place.

On July 15^th, I’m in a poetry reading and a variety show on the same day.  That’s how it goes sometimes.  Details to come.

The prose reading was fantastico!  A packed room.  Really good readings by the four Prosettas.  The wine and snacks consumed.  Lots of hugs and applause.  One of my surprise guests was Lisa Harmon, a comic.  Sometimes, my poetry pals attend a comedy show I’m in.  But it is rare that a comedy friend attends a poetry or prose reading that I’m in.  Linda San Lucas and Jerry Shack did once, and now Lisa Harmon.  I was very pleasantly surprised.  I enjoy when my worlds come together.  

I don’t experience the different parts of my life meeting like George Costanza’s “worlds are colliding!”

One of my long-time friends, Judy, lives in Staten Island, and I live in the Bronx.  She drives, but I don’t.  Typically when getting together, we’d meet in Manhattan.  However, she has driven to the Bronx MANY times. We used to attend a writing group in the Bronx many years ago.  She’s been to almost all of my comedy shows on City Island in the Bronx.  In the last week and a half, she was in the Bronx twice for different walking tours.  Then we got together afterwards.  Twice in a short period of time felt like such a treat.  I wish that were more often the case.

My feline friend Mustache, who lives and works at the nearby discount store, continues to greet me with much affection and loud meows.  We have our affection sessions, which, for me, is therapeutic.  Sometimes, those moments are the highlight of my day.

I just heard thunderous noise.  Not sure if it’s the weather or my upstairs pain-in-the-azz neighbor. 

Please put June 2^nd at 7:45pm on your calendar for comedy on City Island in the Bronx at The Artist, 249 City Island Avenue.  It’s going to be a really good show at only $15 cover, no minimum.  A hat gets passed around for contributions for the hilarious comics.

Hey peepul!!!  Tuesday the 16^th of May is the evening the Prosettas are holding a reading of short prose and memoir pieces at Jefferson Market Library from 6 to 8pm, and it is free!  425 6th Ave, New York, NY 10011.  There will be free refreshments, books for sale, and if you are interested, I will have my divorce t-shirts for sale with me (though not on display, so see me after the reading).

    The “Listen to Your Mother” show was a very good experience.  One of my favorite humans attended the afternoon show.  I did not know that she had been there until the next day when she emailed me.  Thanks so much, Jaye. The hardest part for me was saying goodbye to the cast.  They came from all over the United States and Canada.  We all appreciated each other so much.  Not only our stories, but our spirits.

    For those of you in NYC on May 5^th, 7pm, I will be sharing my poetry at “Dance of the Word” – an event by Evie Ivy that includes poetry, prose, music, and belly dancing.  Plus there will be wine and light fare.  A beautiful way to spend a Friday evening.  353 W. 48 Street, 2nd floor, Studio 3, NYC. ($15)

People, I feel so fortunate in some ways.  I’ve had enough creative projects going on recently (and it’s not over) to have me busy with work I want to do.  I don’t want to be misunderstood – my decades of teaching adults were frequent opportunities to be creative.  My students and I, for the most part, had a real good and growing time.  But recently, I’ve been engaged with other creative work – memoir writing, poetry writing, giving readings, producing and performing stand-up comedy, an upcoming off-off Broadway production of Listen to Your Mother in which I’m cast. 

Each event is its own kind of wonderful.  A few actually pay money.  Yahoo.  It’s so needed.

Art In The Basin booked me to read a half hour of whatever I wanted.  I shared short autobiographical stories.  I had a great time.  The hosts were soooo welcoming, the audience so attentive, the venue (Mon Amour Coffee & Wine) so accommodating. 

There was a hybrid open mic.  My buddy drove me there and attended though he was so very exhausted.  We are chosen ‘siblings’ for over 40 years. We go out of our way for each other.

I had a very encouraging experience doing stand-up (the art I find most challenging) at the International Women Artists’ Salon’s event.  It feels so wonderful when the audience is with me from the beginning.  It feels easy from there, but when that doesn’t happen … 

Also, I was able to sell some shirts at that event!

This Saturday, April 1^st at 3pm and at 7pm (and an option to livestream the 7pm show), I’m part of this unique production. Still some tickets available!  Listen to Your Mother

    For the past few years, I haven’t consistently kept up my appearance.  Of course when I am going on an audition or if I’m in a show, I do bother to look good, but in general when I go to the store or take out the garbage, I look bummy.  I think I went pandemic and didn’t come back. 

    Today when I was returning from two stores in my sweatpants, hoodie, dungaree jacket, mask, no make-up, no earrings, I was thinking that maybe my mood would be uplifted a bit if I bothered to put in some effort to look nice.  As I turned the corner, a man who appeared to be in my age range said hello and acted like he knew me.  I didn’t recognize him but in case I was mistaken, I nodded.  Then he came over to me and said, “You live around here, right?”  I nodded and thought he needed directions or something.  Well, I was wrong.

    “You give me fuck, and I give you money.”

    “Nooo.”  I continued walking away.

    “You have Tinder?”

    “Nooo.”

    I waited until he was far enough away before crossing the street to my building.  My head was spinning.  Is there someone on Tinder who looks like me, I wondered.  I'm not on any dating site.  What about me screams prostitute?  Nothing.  Even when I look bummy, this happens.  So do I really want to go out there looking good?  If I had looked good, I may have attributed this event as punishment for beauty.  After all, we are typically blamed for this kind of shit.

    I’ve known men who said that if they were women, they’d never be broke.  Yeah right.  Let them bend over for anonymous desperate dick and tell me what it’s like. 

    When I entered my lobby, I saw that some neighbor put out a bag of refundable cans.  I gratefully took the bag upstairs.  After returning cans at the supermarket, I can live with myself. 

    Geez.

    Now back to my actual life.  I’ll be sharing autobiographical stories this Tuesday, March 21^st, 7pm at Mon Amour Coffee and Wine, 234 West 238^th Street in the Bronx.  

    The event is free, whether in person or on Zoom.  It includes an open mic, so feel free to bring something to share.  Very welcoming atmosphere.  No one will ask you to fuck for money.  How refreshing!
